Jayanthi Bunyan is an internationally renowned music teacher and performer committed to providing students with an engaging and comprehensive music education. Her philosophy is that all students are capable of success in music, regardless of their background, experience, or ability. By understanding students’ strengths and weaknesses, Jayanthi excels at creating individual expectations and activities that improve each student’s musical knowledge and ability. Using humor and games, Jayanthi cultivates an environment where students are put at ease and able to explore, laugh, and grow.
Movement is an integral part of her music lessons with all students. Incorporating stretching, body mapping, and breathing not only deepens students’ musical understanding and kinesthetic awareness, but also keeps students attentive and motivated. Voice lessons cater to all styles, including classical, musical theater, and blues. Piano lessons give beginning students a healthy foundation as they begin their lifelong musical journey. Private students work on musicality, music reading, and self-confidence and are given performance opportunities twice a year.
As a vocalist, Jayanthi has performed both at venues such as Denver Performing Art’s Center Boetcher Hall and the Kolkata Jazz Festival. She has appeared in numerous operas including Stravinsky’s Rake’s Progress and sung in Northern Colorado’s premiere a cappella choir, the Rocky Mountain Chamber Singers. Most recently, she performed with the Aakash Mittal Quartet in venues throughout India and joined Denver’s Mudra Dance Studio for their production of Gyaan, a multimedia performance that used dance, music, and video to address loss in today’s society.
Jayanthi has received several grants for her work with children’s choirs and children with special needs. During her time at Kohl Elementary, she organized two outreach concerts for senior citizens at a local auditorium. Through this experience, fourth and fifth grade students were given speaking and solo opportunities while experiencing the hard work and satisfaction one receives when giving back to one’s community. In 2011, she created a music class with personalized activities that enabled students with autism, down syndrome, and physical disabilities to reach an extraordinary level of musical achievement in singing, communicating, and socializing.
Jayanthi received a Masters of Music Education concentrating in Vocal Performance and Pedagogy from the University of Colorado, Boulder in 2012 and a Bachelor of Music Education from the State University of New York at Fredonia in 2008. She recently relocated to New York City after living in Kolkata, India. In her free time, Jayanthi enjoys traveling, cooking, hiking, photography, and hula hooping.
